Seoul shares open tad higher on US gains

South Korean stocks started a tad higher Wednesday, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index climbed 1.09 points, or 0.04 percent, to 2,603.68 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

US stock indices gained ground, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 0.43 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite gaining 0.54 percent.

In Seoul, tech and battery shares led the positive start.

Samsung Electronics, the world's largest memory chipmaker, increased 1.04 percent and flat screen manufacturer LG Display edged up 0.08 percent.

Leading battery maker LG Energy solution gained 0.84 percent, and Posco Future M jumped 2.87 percent.

But carmakers went south, with industry leader Hyundai Motor falling 0.6 percent and its sister Kia retreating 0.42 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,294.65 won against the US dollar, down 0.15 won from the previous session's close. (Yonhap)
