The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea will present exhibitions in collaboration with regional museums in Suwon, Jeongeup and Jeju Island to allow more people to appreciate the art to strengthen research with regional institutes.

The exhibition “Before the Wind” will kick off Thursday at the Suwon Museum of Art in Gyeonggi Province. It will present social participatory art through 189 works by 41 artists who touch on themes dealing with conflict between the two Koreas, gender issues and the democracy movement from the late 1970s to the 2000s. The exhibition will run through Nov. 7.

“We encourage collaboration with regional museums across the country to share our know-how with the museums, and we hope these opportunities can help regional art thrive,” said Youn Bum-mo, director of the MMCA. 

The Jeongeup Museum of Art in North Jeolla Province will showcase “Crucial Moments in the History of Korean Art” from Sept. 7 to Dec. 12, focusing on Korean art history from the 1920s to the 2000s. Some 70 masterpieces by 46 Korean modern art masters, including Lee U-fan, Chang Uc-chin, Kim Whan-ki and Lee Jung-seop will be presented.

The MMCA exhibition “Conservator C’s Day” -- which was held last year at the national museum’s Cheongju venue in North Chungcheong Province -- will be held at the Jeju Museum of Art on Jeju Island from Oct. 8 to Jan. 9, 2022. The exhibition puts the conservator who goes by “C” at the center of focus and gives a glimpse of how the restoration process of artworks takes place at the museum.

Ongoing exhibitions at the MMCA in Seoul include “MMCA Lee Kun-hee Collection: Masterpieces of Korean Art,” “DNA: Dynamic & Alive Korean Art,” “Chung Sang Hwa,” “Hwang Jai Hyoung: Rehabilitation,” and “Movement making Movement.” Online reservations are required through the MMCA’s official website.
