South Korea said Wednesday that it is "continuously" considering ways to impose fresh unilateral sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear and missile tests.

The government has been mulling punitive actions in the follow-up to the UN Security Council sanctions over the North's sixth nuclear test on Sept. 3.

"The government is continuously considering slapping unilateral sanctions, but specifics have not been decided," Baik Tae-hyun, spokesman at Seoul's unification ministry, said in a regular press briefing.

"As long as North Korea continues its provocations, various measures could be considered as a way to increase (the effects) of international sanctions and pressure," he added.

The latest UN sanctions included the restriction of energy supplies to North Korea and an exports ban on North Korean textiles.

Last year, South Korea slapped two sets of unilateral sanctions following North Korea's fourth and fifth nuclear tests. (Yonhap)
