The next extended Chuseok holiday similar to that of this year will come in 2025, according to the calendar.

This year saw the annual Chuseok holiday extend for a record 10 days, thanks to the traditional festival falling between two national holidays -- National Foundation Day and Hangul Day and two weekends. In addition, the government’s designation of Oct. 2 as a national holiday this year allowed the holiday to extend from Sept. 30 to Oct. 9.

The country will not see a similarly long Chuseok holiday until 2025. In that year, Chuseok falls on Monday, Oct. 6. The weekend prior to the traditional holiday is preceded by Oct. 3 National Foundation Day. The usual three-day Chuseok holiday is immediately followed by the Hangul Day holiday on Thursday. With the holidays ending on a Thursday, hopes are rising that Oct. 10, a Friday, will be designated a temporary holiday, which would stretch the holidays to Oct. 12, Sunday.

A similar schedule is expected in 2028, when both Chuseok and the National Foundation Day fall on Oct. 3, Tuesday, making Thursday a temporary holiday.

If Friday, Oct. 6, 2028 is designated as another temporary holiday, bridging the following weekend and the Hangul Day holiday on Monday, Oct. 9, that year’s autumn holiday would be extended to 10 days.

Although designating temporary holidays is not obligatory by law, the government has allowed in-between days off to encourage more consumption and boost the economy.
