S-Oil, South Korea’s third-largest oil refiner, is working to give back to the local community through its ongoing social contribution efforts, which touch upon the diverse needs of Korean society.

The company’s so-called “Sunshine Sharing” campaign seeks to recognize the sacrifices made by local firemen, offer aid to underprivileged members of society, and advocate environmental protection.

Since 2006, S-Oil has been providing financial aid to the families of local firemen who died while on duty — including scholarships granted to their children until graduation from college, as well as a delivery of 30 million won ($24,000) to each of the families of deceased firefighters.

The firm also offers financial support to the families of firefighters who were injured on the job, while recognizing members of Korea’s Coast Guard for their service and dedication through awards, programs and financial aid.

In an aim to maintain close ties with the public, S-Oil also regularly holds free cultural events at its headquarters in Seoul as well as carries out social contribution efforts in Ulsan, where its main production facilities are located.

In partnership with Korea’s Cultural Heritage Administration, the refiner has also been actively supporting local efforts to protect endangered species — including otters, cranes, cyprinid fish and long-horned beetles — since 2008.
