An artwork installation commemorating South Korean military soldiers’ sacrifice for national security was installed at the Nuri Peace Park in Imjingak, northern Gyeonggi Province, in a ceremony Wednesday.

The piece was installed by Hyosung Group, which provided financial support of 200 million won ($170,000).

“We hope the artwork will bring all people’s hearts together seeking peace in the country, while honoring the devotion and endeavors of the soldiers,” Hyosung president Cho Hyun-joon said at the ceremony before 170 military officers.

The “Foot of Peace” depicts a large foot of a soldier. It reflects the zeal for peace of two soldiers who had their legs amputated after triggering land mines while on a military mission inside the Demilitarized Zone on Aug. 4.

The detonator of a real 155-millimeter cannon ball launched by the South Korean military in response to North Korea’s shelling of Yeongcheon, Gyeonggi Province, was melted for the work. The floor area of the sculpture was spread with soil from DMZ.
