German luxury carmaker Audi is showcasing new sedans, an electric SUV concept car to challenge Tesla, and its state-of-the-art auto technologies at the 66th International Motor Show in Frankfurt, running from Sept. 17 to 27.

One of highlights at the event is the launch of the all-new A4, the carmaker’s most popular sedan, and the all-new A4 Avant.

The range-topping small sedan in competition with Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class and BMW’s 3 Series came back, armed with more power, less weight and a new turbocharged engine, the company said, adding that the two models will go on sale at the start of next year.

While making little changes to the exterior, the interior has undergone a big transformation over the outgoing model. Audi A4 introduced the “Virtual Cockpit’’ instrument display as an optional equipment. Other features include an improved Audi MMI infotainment software with an 8.3-inch display, Bang & Olufsen Sound System with 3D sound, an Audi phone box with wireless charging, and a head-up display.

Improved power output of the new A4 ranges from 150 to 272 horsepower, depending on engine options. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual, an 8-speed tiptronic gearbox or a 7-speed S-Tronic automatic units.

Another highlight of Audi at the auto show is a purely battery-powered SUV concept called Audi e-tron quattro.

The all-electric venture signaled a change of course for Audi, which had previously focused on developing electric variants of existing models such as its two-seater R8 sports car.

Audi said its e-tron quattro, to be launched by 2018, would run for over 500 kilometers per single charge, which is slightly higher than the Tesla Model S P90D.
