Ssangyong Motor Co. said Sunday it will launch new and improved versions of its sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in the South Korean market, upgrading features but limiting gains in price.

The local unit of Indian SUV maker Mahindra & Mahindra said its Korando C, to be launched here this week, is equipped with Japanese transmission maker Aisin Seiki Co.'s 6-speed automatic gearbox, along with a Dynamic Eco engine with strong low-end torque to provide drivers with better fuel efficiency.

The five-seater compact SUV also has a better sound system and features magnesium diaphragm technology that suppresses external noise and delivers a more subtle sound, Ssangyong said.

The Rexton W midsize SUV, while putting emphasis on its muscular design, has been upgraded with a vertical radiator grille newly designed by Ssangyong as well as both ventilated seats and heated backrests. Headlights are replaced with high-intensity discharge lamps, while light-emitting diodes are applied to both daytime running lights and interior lighting.

All four of the improved models, including the Korando Turismo and Korando Sports, are equipped with Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, while three, excluding the Korando C, sport the carmaker's latest steering wheel design, Ssangyong said.

The price tag for the Korando C compact SUV ranges from 20.83 million won (US$18,859) to 26.95 million won, while that for the Rexton W is between 28.12 million won and 38.77 million won. The base prices for the Korando Turismo and the Korando Sports are 25.76 million won and 21.06 million won, respectively. (Yonhap)
