The leadership change at the nation’s second-largest carmaker came after former president Lee Sam-woong offered his resignation over the prolonged wage talks that led to several partial strikes over the past few months.
The management and union reached an agreement on Oct. 28.
Since the first talks started in May, the union staged walkouts for a total of 96 hours, due to which the carmaker suffered production losses of 69,350 vehicles, worth 1.1 trillion won ($1.03 billion).
“President Lee tried hard to do away with the company’s old practices of management-labor talks,” said a Kia spokesperson. “He wanted to take responsibility for his failure. His resignation was accepted immediately.”
The new CEO Park joined Kia in 1982 after graduating from Dankook University. Over three decades, he served at diverse positions, including CFO at the Seoul headquarters and regional chief of the company’s Indian operation.
