대통령 탄원에도 불구, FIFA '핵 이빨' 수아레스, 9경기 출전 정지

 핵심 골게터 수아레스의 핵이빨 사건으로 우루과이가 대통령까지 발벗고 나서 수아레스 구명에 나선 가운데  국제축구연맹(FIFA)은 26일(한국시간) 수아레스에 대해 "A매치 9경기 출전 정지 에 처하고 4개월간 모든 축구 활동을 금지한다"고 밝혔다. 

FIFA가 이날 내린 징계는 바로 적용됨에 따라 수아레스는 2014 브라질 월드컵 축구대회에 우루과이 대표로 더는 나설 수 없다. 

우루과이는 29일 콜롬비아와 16강을 앞두고 있다.

수아레스는 25일 이탈리아와의 대회 조별리그 D조 3차전에서 상대 수비수  조르 조 키엘리니(유벤투스)의 왼쪽 어깨를 깨물었다. 

FIFA는 "그러한 행동은 월드컵 기간엔 특히 더 용납될 수 없다"고 강경한  반응을 보였다.

이러한 결정은 대통령이 '수아레스 구하기' 에 나서고 난 후 이루어져서 우루과이측은 더욱 충격을 받았다. 

AFP 통신에 따르면 호세 무히카 우루과이 대통령은 기자들에게 “나는 그(수아레스)가 어떤 선수를 깨무는 것을 보지 못했다. 하지만 선수들은 서로에게 많은 킥과 주먹을 날린다. 그리고 보통은 그것을 참고 견디며 경기에 임한다”고 말했다고 알려졌다. (khnews@heraldcorp.com)

Suarez kicked out of World Cup for biting opponent


Uruguay star Luis Suarez was hit with a global four-month ban for biting an opponent on Thursday as World Cup chiefs imposed the heaviest sanction against a player in the tournament's history, according to AFP.

Suarez, who bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during his team's Group D win on Tuesday, was kicked out of the tournament with immediate effect and fined 100,000 Swiss francs ($112,000), the report said.

"Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field," FIFA Disciplinary Committee chief Claudio Sulser said, according to AFP.

Football's governing body imposed a four-month ban on all football activities, a nine-game international ban and the fine. The punishment took immediate effect, meaning Suarez misses Uruguay's second round match against Colombia on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, the report said.

The ban from football activity prevents him from entering the stadium for Saturday's game. 
He also received a long ban in 2011 for racially abusing Manchester United's French international Patrice Evra.

Uruguay football officials, who insisted Suarez had not bitten anyone, said they planned to appeal, describing the punishment as "totally exaggerated."

The country's Sports Minister Liliam Kechichian also railed against the verdict. "This disproportionate sanction hurts us," she said on Twitter. (From news reports)
