한국외국어대학교가 학교 설립자 동원(東園) 김흥배(1914~1987) 박사의 동상을 학내에 세울 계획을 발표한 후 일부 동문과 학생들이 김 박사의 친일 의혹을 지적하며 이에 반발하고 있다.
외대 총동문회는 최근 다음달 18일에 열릴 개교 60주년 기념행사 중 하나로 ‘설립자 동상 제막식’을 열 것이라고 밝혔다.
그러나 ‘애국외대 청년동문회’와 한국외대 총학생회 업무를 수행하는 비상대책 위원회는 “설립자라는 이유로 친일 행적이 있는 인물의 동상을 세우는 것은 대학 측에서 제고해야 한다”고 주장하고 있다.
김 박사는 1938년 서울 마포구에 군납 물품을 만드는 노다(野田) 피복공장을 세워 광복 때까지 사장을 맡았고, 태평양전쟁 기간엔 지원 단체인 경성부총력연맹 이사를 지낸 것으로 알려졌다.
이로 인해 그는 2008년 친일인명사전 제작 당시 수록 예정자에 이름을 올렸으나, “조사가 더 필요하다”는 이유로 최종 목록에서는 빠졌다.
애국외대 동문회 측은 조만간 성명을 내고 학교 측에 면담을 요청할 계획이며, 총학생회 비대위는 각 단과대 학생회, 동아리연합회 등과 함께 전체학생대표자회의를 열어 대응방법을 논할 예정이다.
한편 학교 측은 동상 설립을 진행중인 동원육성회 측에서 아직 이 문제에 대해 공식 항의를 받지 않았다고 전했다.

HUFS in controversy over founder’s statue
Hankuk University of Foreign Studies on Sunday faced opposition from its alumni and students over a plan to erect a statue of its founder, who is suspected of aiding Japan during its 1910-45 colonial rule of Korea.
HUFS recently notified its alumni that the university will unveil a statue of late Kim Heung-bae, the school’s founder, during the university’s 60th anniversary on April 18.
But some of the school’s alumni have said that the university should abandon its plan for the statue. They said that Kim was one of the names considered for the 2008 list of alleged pro-Japanese collaborators, although he was left out of the final list due to lack of investigation.
“The university must think twice before building a statute of a person who was pro-Japanese, just because he is the founder” an unnamed alumni of HUFS.
The emergency committee for the HUFS student council also decried the decision, saying that despite all of Kim’s accomplishments, pro-Japanese actions during the colonialism era cannot be overlooked.
The student council said it will discuss further plans concerning the controversial statue with students in every college of the school.
Kim Heung-bae made his fortune through numerous businesses in the mid-20th century and was recognized for his contribution to Korean economy and education, even receiving an Order of Civil Merit in 1983.
The entrepreneur also built and ran a clothing factory that provided material for the Japanese army. He also was a board member of a pro-Japanese organization during the World War II.
