길이가 5미터에 이르는 초대형 미얀마 비단뱀이 미국 플로리다주 남부의 대습지대에서 잡혔다.
플로리다주 남부의 야생 뱀 관리부서의 바비 힐씨가 포획한 이 뱀은 길이가 18 피트 (약 5.5미터)인 암컷으로 무게는 100 파운드 (약 45킬로그램)를 훨씬 넘을 것으로 예측됐다. 이 비단뱀은 정확한 길이와 무게 측정을 위해 플로리다주립대학교로 보내질 예정이다.
이 지역의 대변인 랜디 스미스는 “포획된 비단뱀의 길이가 18 피트 정도로 보인다“며 해당 주에서 발견된 뱀 중에 가장 큰 것으로 보인다며 놀라움을 금치 못했다.
현재 최고 기록은 작년 뱀 수집가인 제이슨 리온이 포획한 길이 18 피트 8인치 (약 5.7미터), 무게 128 파운드 (약 58킬로그램)의 뱀이다.
미얀마 비단뱀은 자연서식지에서는 20 피트 (약 6미터)까지 자라는 것으로 알려졌다.

The carcass of the snake, which likely weighs well over 100 pounds, will be sent to the University of Florida, where biologists will determine its length and weight, said district spokesman Randy Smith., according to the report.
“It looks to be about 18 feet,‘’ said Smith. ”It could very well be a state record.‘’
That record, which stands at 18-feet, 8 inches and 128 pounds, was set by a snake captured last year by snake collector Jason Leon.
Burmese pythons may reach up to 20 feet in their natural habitat.
