The latest movie by Japanese master director Hirokazu Koreeda has surpassed the 100,000 mark in attendance, a big success for an indie film, a market tracker said Monday.

Released on Dec. 19, "Like Father, Like Son" has attracted 101,403 moviegoers to local theaters through Sunday, 39 days after opening, according to data from the Korean Film Council.

The movie is about two families who discover that their six-year-old boys were switched at birth.

In South Korea, an art-house film is considered a box-office success once it hits the 20,000 to 30,000 viewer mark.

"Like Father, Like Son" became the first among all indie films that opened in fewer than 40 theaters in the country to hit the milestone since "A Late Quartet," an American art-house film that topped 100,000 last September for the first time as an indie in five years.

The most-viewed indie film of all time in the country is "Once," a 2006 Irish film written and directed by John Carney, which attracted an audience of 232,459. (Yonhap News)
