전주 상산고등학교가 결국 교학사 한국사 교과서 채택을 철회했다.
상산고의 박삼옥 교장은 7일 오전 전북도의회에서 기자회견을 통해 교학사 교과서를 다음학기에 사용하겠다는 결정을 철회하고 지학사 교과서 1종만을 선정했다고 밝혔다.
박 교장은 “균형잡힌 역사교육을 위해 복수 교과서 (교학사와 지학사)을 선정한 취지와 달리 불신과 분열을 초래해 학생들이 매우 심각한 피해를 볼 상황이 발생해서“라며 설명했다.
박 교장은 “외부의 강압에 의한 철회는 아니다”라면서 “학생들이 양분되는 등 바람직하지 못한 사태가 일어나 교육적인 차원에서 문제를 해결하자는 취지로 이번 결정을 내린 것”이라고 설명했다.
애당초 논란이 많았던 교학사 교과서를 선택한 이유에 대해서는 “역사 왜곡에 대한 논란이 교학사 교과서에 충분히 수정됐으리라 생각했고, 충분히 검토할 시간이 없어 자세한 내용을 보지 못한 면이 있다”면서 채택과정에서의 실수를 사실상 인정했다.
또한 철회를 촉구하는 내용이 담긴 홈페이지 게시판을 폐쇄한 것에 대해서는 “과도한 표현 등 교육기관 정선에 반한다는 판단에서 했지만, 글쓴 분들에 대한 사전조치가 미비한 점은 유감”이라고 밝혔다. 또한 철회를 촉구하는 학생 대자보를 철거한 것에 대해 “상호 소통 노력을 갖지 못해 학생들에게 안타까운 마음을 전한 바 있다”고 말했다.
상산고가 교학사 교과서를 쓰지 않겠다고 밝힘에 따라 경기 파주 한민고등학교만이 교학사 교과서를 채택한 유일한 학교로 남게 되었다.
군인 자녀를 위한 기숙형 학교인 한민고는 교학사 교과서 선택을 비난하는 학생과 학부모들의 글이 연달아 올라오는 등 논란이 가열되자 역사 교사와 다른 고등학교의 역사 교사 세명 이상을 교과선정위원으로 위촉해 총 8종의 한국사 교과서를 대상으로 교과서 선정 작업을 다시 진행할 예정이다. 그러나 선정 절차가 언제 진행될지 여부는 공개하지 않았다.
한편 교학사 교과서 채택 철회가 이어지자 이명희 공주대 역사교육학과 교수는 전날 JTBC와의 인터뷰를 통해 ”자율적 결정이 아니라 엄청난 압박이 작용해서 벌어지는 일“이라고 비판적 입장을 밝혔다.
또한 이전 교학사 교과서 채택을 철회한 학교에 재직하는 교사가 ”채택하라는 학교 측의 압력이 있었다“고 밝힌 것에 대해 ”사립학교 입장에서 본다면 아주 자연스러운 일이라고 본다“면서 ”그게 (교과서 선정이) 100% 교사의 소관이라고 생각한다면 그런 사람들은 사립학교 있을 자격이 없다“고 비난했다.

A local high school announced Tuesday that it is overturning an earlier decision to use a controversial history textbook from Kyohak Publishing Co., following a firestorm of criticism from its students, alumni, parent and civic groups.
“Unlike our original intention of wanting to provide balanced history lessons, there is now a risk of students suffering from severe division and distrust among students, teachers and parents,” Park Sam-ok, the principal Park Sang-ok of Sangsan High School in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, said in a press conference.
In light of Sangsan’s announcement, Hanmin High School -- a boarding school for the children of military personnel -- became the only school to known to have selected the often-disputed textbook. The school, however, may also decide to bail out of the textbook conundrum, as it announced that it is reconsidering its selection of the Kyohak book.
Some 15 schools which had originally planed to use the textbook, which opponents claimed whitewashed Japanese colonialism and South Korea’s junta dictatorship, had faced mounting criticism led by liberal groups and students.
The Education Ministry on Monday announced that it was investigating whether the schools which stopped using the Kyohak books were pressured to do so by outside parties. The probe is expected to take two days. Its decision was berated by Rep. Yoo Ki-hong of the main opposition Democratic Party, who said that the investigation itself can act as outside pressure in favor of the textbook.
Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education also urged the ministry to stop the probe, saying that that the investigation may act as “unfair pressure from the outside.”
The ruling Saenuri Party claimed that DP and the Korean Teacher’s Union had “vandalized democracy” by pressuring the schools not to use the textbook.
Lee Myung-hee, one of the book’s co-authors and professor of history at Kongju National University, denounced the protests against his book and claimed what people said were errors in his book were merely “new perspectives.”
When asked about some teachers’ testimony that schools had pressured them to choose the textbook against their will, Lee said it is “very natural” in case of private schools for principals or the school board to reveal their opinion on choosing textbooks.
