GM Korea on Thursday was awarded by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for its efforts to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
The ministry, which adopted a CO2 emissions management system in 2010, evaluated related gas-reduction efforts at individual workplaces over the past three years.
The Korean unit of the U.S.-based General Motors was the only carmaker that was honored with the award.
“GM Korea is one of our global operations that have successfully carried out GM’s environment-friendly policies,” said Masoud Amin-Javaheri, real estate and facilities director at GM.
“We will continue to lead green efforts within the automotive industry.”
According to the company, GM Korea currently plays a control-tower role in managing energy consumption in emerging markets such as Asia, Africa, Australia and Russia.
As part of the efforts, the company operates an exclusive team and discusses measures for energy reduction on a regular basis at all GM workplaces globally.
GM Korea also plans to build a solar power facility at its Changwon plant in South Gyeongsang Province that produces the all-electric Spark EV.
Using the facility that produces an annual 3,700 megawatt-hours of electricity, the company aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 2,400 tons every year.
