여름철은 공연 비수기란 말이 무색할 만큼 하반기의 첫달인 7월부터 뮤지컬 대전이 뜨겁다. ‘스칼렛 핌퍼넬’ ‘하이스쿨 뮤지컬’ ‘시카고’ ‘해를 품은 달’ ‘엘리자벳’ ‘애비뉴큐(Q)’ ‘클레오파트라’ 등 해외 라이선스 초연과 앙코르, 창작 뮤지컬이 7~8월에 줄줄이 무대에 오른다.

공연 포털 인터파크 플레이디비와 플레이디비 회원을 대상으로 지난달 21일부터 30일까지 열흘간 하반기 뮤지컬 기대작에 관한 설문조사에 의하면 명불허전 김준수의 ‘엘리자벳’이 브로드웨이 초연작들을 누르고 하반기에 가장 보고 싶은 뮤지컬 1위에 올랐다.

‘엘리자벳’은 전체 응답자 1891명 가운데 31.4%의 지지를 받았다. 좌석수 1000석 이상 극장에서 공연하는 뮤지컬 16편 가운데 중복응답을 허용한 결과다. 2위는 지난해 최고 흥행을 거둔 ‘위키드’의 첫 라이선스 공연으로, 지지율은 14.5%였다. 

이어 ‘두 도시 이야기’(8.5%), ‘스칼렛 핌퍼넬’(7.7%), ‘몬테크리스토’(5.9%) 순으로 나타났다.

국내 뮤지컬 애호가들은 경쾌하고 밝은 현대물보단 역사적 배경을 둔 장중한 스케일과 감동에 한 표를 던진 셈이다.

가장 영향력 있는 뮤지컬 배우로는 JYJ 멤버 김준수가 27.5%를 얻어, 영화배우 출신 조승우(19.6%)를 누르고 1위를 차지했다. 후보 21명 가운데 중복선택한 결과다. 이어 류정한(8.6%), 홍광호 (6.3%), 김선영 (5.8%) 등 뮤지컬 전문 배우가 5위권에 이름을 올렸다.

뮤지컬 티켓 가격에 대해선 고가 인식이 팽배했다. 대극장 뮤지컬 R석 기준으로 10만~15만원에 티켓 가격이 형성되는 실정에 대해 ‘비싼 편이다’(60.5%) ‘매우 비싸다’(33.2%) 등 응답자 93.7%가 ‘비싸다’고 봤다. 반면 ‘적정하다’ 응답은 5.8%였으며, ‘싸다’는 응답은 0.5%에 불과했다.

대극장 뮤지컬 R석 기준으로 적정한 책정가를 물은 결과 ‘5만~8만원’(47.9%) ‘8만~10만원’(42.8%) ‘5만원 이하’(5.4%) ‘10만~13만원’(3,8%) ‘13만원 이상’(0.2%) 등의 순으로 높게 조사됐다. (코리아헤럴드)

JYJ’s Kim to prevail in musical scenes for the second half

“Scarlet Pimpernel,” “High School Musical,” “Elizabeth,” “Chicago,” and many more are set to raise their curtains on South Korea’s musical stages in the latter half of 2013.

In a bid to forecast which musicals and actors would advance, The Herald Business, a sister paper of The Korea Herald, conducted a 10-day survey from June 21-30 about the upcoming musicals on 1,891 members of Interpark’s Play DB, a performance arts Web portal.

Kim Jun-soo, a member of music group JYJ, dominated the charts.

Out of 16 musicals marked to open in the second half, 31.4 percent of the respondents picked “Elizabeth,” starring Kim, as “the most expected musical.” In the second slot came “Wicked,” with 14.5 percent opting to vote the first licensed stage of the 2012’s best-selling musical.

“A Tale of Two Cities” and “Scarlet Pimpernel” came in third and fourth holding 8.5 percent and 7.7 percent, respectively. 

The results indicated South Korean musical fans’ preference for solemn and grave themes over light and modern-timed plays. 

As for favorite musical actors, 27.5 percent picked Kim Jun-soo, once again showing his unfading popularity in the musical industry. Actor-turned-musical actor Jo Seung-woo came in the second place with 19.6 percent votes, followed by professional musical actors Ryu Jeong-han, Hong Gwang-ho and Kim Sun-yeong.

As for the price of the performance, 60.5 percent of the respondents felt an average price of 100,000 won for an R-Level seat was “too expensive” and 47.9 percent said half of that price would be an optimal rate for the same seat.
