20일 출시한 카카오톡 PC버전에서 개인용 컴퓨터의 고유식별번호인 맥주소(MAC주소)를 수집하고 있다는 지적에 대해 카카오측은 사실이 아니라고 밝혔다.

카카오는 “카카오톡 PC버전 이용자는 최대 5대까지 인증해서 사용할 수 있는데, 이 때 수집되는 정보는 LAN카드 및 다양한 하드웨어 정보를 기반으로 한 것으로 맥 어드레스는 사용하지 않는다”고 말했다

또한, “랜카드 정보는 에러가 발생했을 때 유무선 랜카드 여부를 구분하기 위한 항목으로 사용될 수 있으나, PC 단말기를 식별하기 위한 값으로 수집하고 있지 않다,”라고 덧붙였다.

Kakao denies MAC address collection

Kakao, which runs mobile messenger “Kakao Talk,” said on Wednesday that its PC version does not gather MAC addresses, a type of hardware identification for computers. 

Rumors had spread among users that the company’s forthcoming PC version of Kakao Talk will collect sensitive information from users without prior consent. 

“Kakao does not collect MAC addresses,” a Kakao official told The Korea Herald. “We allow users to authenticate as many as five different PCs and the method is based on LAN cards and other hardware sources.”
