박근혜 대통령이 2013 서울국제도서전을 찾았다.

2013 서울국제도서전은 이번이 19회째로, 25여개국과 610여개의 출판사가 참여하여 역대 최대 규모를 자랑한다.

박 대통령은 개막식인 19일날 행사장인 서울 삼성동의 코엑스를 찾아 5권의 책을 구입했다. 이는 ‘이이(李珥) 답성호원(答成浩原)’, ‘일러스트 이방인’, ‘유럽의 교육’, ‘철학과 마음의 치유’, ‘정조와 홍대용, 생각을 겨루다(계방일기•桂坊日記 완역)였다.

평소 독서를 즐기기로 유명한 박 대통령은 이날 축사에서도 “인생에서 가장 힘든 시기를 보낼 때 성현들의 지혜가 담긴 동서양 고전들의 글귀가 저를 바로 세웠고 이겨낼 수 있는 힘을 줬다,”라고 말해 독서의 중요성을 강조했다.

또한, 박 대통령은 개막식에서 “디자인은 창조경제와도 굉장히 맥이 닿아 있는데 디자인을 다른 말로 정의하면 사람을 사랑하는 것으로, 사람에 대한 관심이라든가 사랑이 발전하려면 역시 인문학적인 소양이 풍부해야 된다”고 강조했다. 이어 “노숙자나 어려운 국민의 경우 복지를 통해 일자리로 연결하는 노력은 할 수 있는데 마음속 삶의 가치에 대한 느낌이 생기지 않으면 일을 하다가도 그만둘 수 있다”며 “그러니 복지정책만으로 되는 게 아니라 국민에게도 인문학적 소양을 쌓을 수 있는 기회를 줘야 발전할 수 있다”고 덧붙였다.

2013 서울국제도서전은 오는 23일까지 열리며, 저자와의대화, 인문학아카데미, 북멘토 프로그램 등 다양한 행사가 진행될 예정이다. (코리아헤럴드)

Park stresses humanities at Seoul Book Fair

The 19th Seoul International Book Fair kicked off on Wednesday with President Park Geun-hye attending the opening ceremony in a bid to promote reading books on humanities. 

“I have always relied on wisdom from the teachings of the sages found in these classics,” said Park in her congratulatory speech at the opening. She also mentioned how the books have “helped her endure hard times in the past.”

Park stopped by one of the 771 booths from 25 countries and bought five different humanities-related books, two of which were Korean classics -- “Dabseonghowon” by Lee Yi, and a complete version of another centuries-old book, “Gyebang Ilgi,” which was translated into modern Korean.
She also purchased two French works of fiction and a philosophy book written by a Korean writer. 

Her emphasis on reading humanities books is in line with her pursuit of achieving a creative economy. According to Park, “love and care towards the people in need of help” stems from the knowledge of humans which in turn “becomes the grounding for a creative economy.”

“Even if the government improves welfare by creating more jobs, it’s a matter of the people’s set of values that keeps them working. Therefore, providing opportunities to nurture their understanding of others is crucial for the nation to advance,” she added.

The book fair is scheduled to run through Sunday at COEX Convention Center.
