한국을 대표하는 8명의 여성 전통 춤꾼들이 한자리에 모인다.

한국문화재보호재단이 주최하는 제5회 ‘팔무전’ 이 오는 30일과 31일에 서울 대치동에 위치한 한국문화의 집(KOUS)에서 열린다. 

2011년, ‘남무열전’ 이라는 제목으로 8명의 남성 전통 무용가들을 초청해 흥겨운 춤판을 벌여 관중들을 매료시킨 ‘팔무전’ 이 올해는 ‘여무열전’ 이라는 부제로 한국을 대표하는 8명의 여성 전통 무용가들을 초청한다. 

각각 다른 ‘류’와 ‘파’를 대표하는 이들은 5월 30일과 31일 저녁 8시부터 2시간에 걸쳐 진행되는 공연에서 각자의 대표작을 공연할 예정이다. 이날 관중들은 마당과 기방, 법당과 궁전을 오가며 춤판을 벌이는 8명의 무대연출을 경험할 수 있을 것이다. 

‘살풀이’ 장단에 맞춰 흰색 명주수건을 들고 즉흥적으로 ‘살풀이춤’ 을 추는 김정녀(72) 씨는 무속신앙이 깊은 한국의 전통을 춤으로 나타낸다.

조선시대 나라의 태평을 기원하며 추던 ‘태평무’ 는 관복차림으로 공연하는 이현자(77) 씨의 대표작이다. 

불교의 영향을 받아 춤으로 표현된 대표작들도 선보인다.

이애주(67) 씨는 1996년 중요무형문화재로 등록된 ‘승무’를 그녀만의 독특한 강약조절로 표현할 예정이다.

한동희(68) 스님의 ‘나비춤’ 역시 한국의 오래된 불교전통에서 유래된 춤으로 
그는 공연 시 마치 나비와 같은 모양의 승복을 입고 무대의 흥을 돋굴 것이다. 

‘팔무전’ 의 기획 및 연출을 맡고 있는 진옥섭 예술감독은 “이번 공연을 통해 전통 춤이 박제된 전통이 아닌 관객과 함께 살아 숨쉬는 전통이 되길 바란다” 고 전했다.

‘팔무전’ 은 오는 30일과 31일 이틀에 걸쳐 저녁 8시부터 서울 강남구 대치동에 위치한 한국문화의 집(KOUS)에서 열린다. 입장권은 1만원에서 3만원 사이다.

Eight Korean traditional dance masters to come together

“Palmujeon,” organized by the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation, from May 30-31, is a rare opportunity to see masters of eight different forms of Korean traditional dance all performing at the same venue.

While the event two years ago, subtitled “Nammuyeoljeon,” featured only male dancers, the show this year will feature eight female dance masters, each with her own unique style specializing in different genres of traditional dance.

During the two-hour event, the eight dance masters will perform in different settings for the different genres of dance -- from a courtyard to a courtesan’s room, and from a Buddhist temple to a palace -- as they showcase their own specific styles on stage. 

With long white sleeves attached to her arms, Kim Jeong-neo will perform a Korean traditional spirit cleansing dance called “salpuri,” which has its origin in the shamanistic rituals of early Goryeo.

Dressed in “gwanbok,” or official clothing worn in the Joseon royal court, artist Lee Hyun-ja will showcase “Taepyeongmu,” a royal court dance originally performed to wish the well-being of the country during Joseon period. 

As Korea has long been influenced by Buddhism, dancers specializing in various forms of Buddhist dance will also perform. 

“Seungmu,” or monk’s dance, which has been designated as an intangible cultural property of Korea since 1996, will be showcased by Lee Ae-joo, with her signature combination of gentle yet fierce movements.

Han Dong-hee will perform “Nabichum,” or the butterfly dance, which is also rooted in Korea’s Buddhist culture. During the dance, Han will wear a specially designed costume, a monk’s robe with wide sleeves called, “jangsam.” 

“By holding this annual event and inviting the eight best traditional dancers of our time, I hope that the old tradition and culture of our country can continue to live on,” said Jin Ok-seob, the director of “Palmujeon.”

“Palmujeon” will be staged 8 p.m.-10 p.m., May 30-31 at Korea Cultural House in Dachi-dong, Seoul.
