Korea and Brunei are increasing trade in food products by sharing industry expertise on product development and marketing.

ASEAN-Korea Center held a seminar Thursday in Brunei’s capital city Bandar Seri Begawan, with the Brunei Economic Development Board and the Brunei Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The ASEAN-Korea Center hosted the seminar, “2013 Seminar on Developing Local Food Products for the Global Market,” in the Southeast Asian country which is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Some 40 local Bruneian food industry businesspeople and experts participated in the daylong meeting with their Korean counterparts.

“The ASEAN-Korea Center hopes the seminar will provide an opportunity for Bruneian food enterprises to deepen their understanding of the Korean market and contribute to invigorating trade in the food industry between Korea and Brunei,” the center said.

The seminar could be particularly beneficial for Brunei as the island nation seeks to lessen its dependency on oil and natural gas exports. Revenues from its energy sector account for well over half its GDP.

The agro-fisheries sector is one area that the Bruneian Embassy said the country hoped to develop.

The forum also provided a practical exercise session on the development of Bruneian agro-fisheries products, as well as a consulting session, with the aim of upgrading the competitiveness of the participating Bruneian food processors for the global market.
