대구철도, 여성 전용칸 검토중

대구도시철도는 여성승객을 보호하기 위한 일환으로 ‘여성 전용칸’ 운영을 검토 중이라고 밝혔다.

도시철도 관계자는 복잡한 출근시간대인 오전 7시부터 9시까지 1,2호선 지하철 6량 중 1량을 여성 전용칸으로 운영하는 방안을 고려하고 있다고 언급했다.

이번 방안은 급증하는 지하철 성추행사건을 막기 위한 예방책으로 제안되었다. 실제로 경찰청이 밝힌 ‘지하철 성추행 범죄 현항’에 따르면, 2011년 1,313건의 성추행 건이 집계되었다. 이는 2008년 466건에서 3배 이상 증가한 수치다.

실제 일본에서는 여성 전용칸을 운영하는 노선이 있다. 2000년 게이오(京王) 전철은 취객들의 횡포로부터 여성들을 보호하기 위해 여성전용칸을 만들어 현재까지 운영 중이다.

서울시와 서울도시철도공사는 2011년 여성전용칸 설치를 추진하려 했으나 남성에 대한 역차별 행위라는 주장 등의 반대 여론에 밀려 무산된 바 있다.

Daegu may get women-only subway cars

Daegu Metropolitan Transit Corporation said it was considering limiting one in six subway cars to women as a measure to prevent crime.

The plan has been suggested as a measure to stop the increasing number of sexual harassment incidents on the subway. The number of reported incidents almost tripled to 1,313 in 2011 compared to 466 in 2008, according to the National Police Agency.

Several Japanese subway lines run women-only subway cars. Since 2000, Keihan Railway has operated them during morning rush hours and late at night to protect women from harassment.

However, Seoul faced strong opposition when it proposed women-only cars in 2011. Surveys regarding the issue showed that the public objected to the measure, seeing the measure as sexist against men.

The corporation will decide whether to approve the plan at the end of January.
