South Korean builder Daelim Industrial Co. said Thursday it has won a $295 million order to build a large petrochemical plant in Saudi Arabia.

Under the deal with Saudi Butanol Co., Daelim Industrial will build the plant at the Al Jubail industrial complex on the Persian Gulf coast to produce 350,000 tons of butanol per year and 28,400 cubic meters of synthesis gas per hour, said the company.

Saudi Butanol is a joint venture established by big name companies in the Middle East country, including state-run Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Co. and Sahara Petrochemicals Co.

The South Korean builder said it will complete the project by May 2015, 28 months after it begins construction.

Butanol, or butyl alcohol, is a primary alcohol to be used as a solvent, as an intermediate in chemical synthesis and as fuel.

With the latest order, Daelim Industrial now has a total of 10 orders, worth $7.5 billion, in operation in Saudi Arabia. (Yonhap News)
