A 12-member theft ring consisting entirely of teenagers was nabbed by police in South Gyeongsang Province on Wednesday. The ring stole about 100 million won ($91,000) using a stolen Mercedes, and even used female members to lure men into motels before robbing them.

Recent reports and statistics appear to suggest that the number of teenagers committing violent crimes is on the rise.

According to “2012 Statistics on Teenagers” by Statistics Korea, the proportion of violent crimes perpetrated by teenagers increased to 3.5 percent in 2010 from 2.8 percent in 2009.

Another example of violent teenage crime by teenagers took place last month when a 16-year-old girl, after luring a 30-year-old man into having sex with her, called up her friend and mugged him. She and two others were taken into custody by police.

Some experts suggest that youngsters are becoming more violent because they are exposed to a barrage of violence in their everyday lives.

“Teenagers these days are bombarded with information related to violence coming from news or movies. The information (from those sources) allows them to commit crimes more easily,” Professor Gwak Dae-gyeong of Dongguk University’s Department of Police Administration told local media.

Between the parents pampering their children, and educators overemphasizing students’ rights, Gwak said today’s teens are gradually becoming more self-centered.

“Many teens nowadays have a tendency to duck responsibility but claim rights, which makes it hard for other people to discipline them.”

무서운 10대들, 남자를 모텔로 유인해...

지난 7일, 경남에서 청소년 12명으로 이뤄진 강도단이 발각되었다. 이들은 26회에 걸쳐 무려 1억원어치 금품을 훔친 혐의를 받고 있다.

사천경찰서는 김모 (18)군 등 5명에 대해 특수강도 혐의로 구속영장을 신청하고, 김모 (17)양 등 5명을 같은 혐의로 불구속하는 한편 달아난 공범 2명을 쫓고 있다.

범행의 규모보다 더욱 충격적인 것은 이들의 범행 방식이었다. 이들은 훔친 벤츠 승용차를 타고 전국을 돌아다니며 금은방, 옷가게 등을 터는가 하면, “꽃뱀” 역할을 맡은 여자 멤버들이 남성을 유혹해 모텔로 데려온 다음 남자 멤버들이 급습해 금품을 뺏기도 했다.

이들은 범행 당시에는 복면과 장갑을 쓰는 등 전문 폭력단 못지 않은 치밀함도 보였다.

통계청이 발표한 ‘2012 청소년 통계’에 따르면 2010년에 강력범죄를 저지른 청소년은 전체 강력범죄 중 3.5%로, 2009년 2.8%보다 증가했다.

이렇듯 10대 강력범죄가 증가하면서, 그 범행 방식 역시 악랄해지고 있어 많은 이들이 우려의 목소리를 높이고 있다.

지난달 30일, 경기 남양주 경찰서는 성매매를 조건으로 30세 남성을 유인해 강도행각을 벌인 16세 A양 등 세 명을 붙잡았다.

A양은 스마트 폰 채팅을 통해 “즉석에서 만나자”고 남성을 유인한 다음, 동료들이 불러 “경찰에 신고하겠다”고 협박한 뒤 돈과 차량을 빼앗은 혐의를 받고 있다.

일부 전문가들은 청소년들이 언론, 영화 등에 나오는 폭력적인 정보에 무분별하게 노출되면서 쉽게 범죄를 저지르는 경우가 많다고 분석했다. 또한 모든 것을 자식위주로 하는 가정환경 등으로 인해 10대들 사이에서 책임은 회피하고 권리만 주장하는 경향이 생겨나고 있다고 설명했다.
