A professional gamer forfeited a match due to a Korean government regulation which bans minors from playing game after midnight.

"Starcraft 2" pro gamer Lee Seung-hyun, 15, faced another gamer Choi Min-su on Oct. 14 to win a ticket for the final of a tournament titled “Iron Squid Chapter 2,” to be held in France. Considering viewers from overseas, their match began near midnight.

But Lee adopted a seemingly reckless strategy in the second round and hurriedly finished it, mentioning his concern over the “game shutdown system.” As a result, he lost the match, leaving many overseas audiences confused.

The game shutdown system, introduced by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family in Korea, is a regulation that prohibits gamers under 16 from connecting to online games between midnight and 6 in the morning. The regulation came into effect on Nov. 20 last year.

As the shutdown system is already under heavy criticism from many young gamers and the local game industry, Lee’s incident is adding to the complaints on online communities over the regulation’s negative impact on aspiring gamers.

프로게이머, 결승서 돌연 경기포기.. 왜?

한 10대 프로게이머가 청소년들의 심야시간 게임 접속을 금지한 ‘셧다운제’ 때문에 경기를 사실상 포기해 논란이 일고 있다.

프로게이머 이승현(15)는 지난 10월 14일 스타크래프트2 대회인 ‘아이언 스퀴드 챕터2’ 본선이 열릴 프랑스 행 티켓을 놓고 최민수 선수와 예선 결승전을 치렀다. 해외 시청자들도 많은 점을 감안해 경기는 자정이 가까운 시간이 되어서야 시작됐다.

그러나 2라운드가 시작되자 이승현 선수는 “셧다운 당하는데”라는 멘트를 남기며 누가 봐도 무모해 보이는 전략을 채택해 경기를 서둘러 끝냈다. 2라운드를 패한 이 선수는 이후 다른 아이디로 경기를 지속했으나 끝내 결승행 티켓을 놓치고 말았다. 경기를 지켜보던 많은 외국 시청자들은 황당하다는 반응을 보였다.

여성가족부가 제안한 청소년 게임셧다운제는 만 16세 미만 청소년들이 자정부터 새벽 6시까지 게임에 접속할 수 없도록 규정하고 있는 제도로 작년 11월 20부터 시행되고 있다.

이러한 셧다운제가 수많은 게임 이용자들과 국내 게임업계의 비난을 받고 있는 가운데 이번에 발생한 이 선수의 사건은 이 제도의 정당성에 대한 더 많은 논란을 불러일으킬 것으로 예상된다.
