Samsung Electronics Co., LG Electronics Inc. and Philips Electronics North American Corp. were sued by Illinois over alleged price fixing, based on claims the companies inflated costs for computer monitors and televisions.
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan filed the suit today in state court in Chicago. The complaint, which also names Hitachi Ltd. and Toshiba Corp. among others, claims the companies agreed to fix the price of, and limit production of, cathode-ray tubes from March 1, 1995, through at least Nov. 25, 2007, according to the filing.
The cathode-ray tubes are used in televisions and computer monitors, and a portion of the inflated prices was passed on to customers in Illinois, according to the complaint. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and penalties for the alleged overcharges.
High-ranking executives at the companies “met quarterly to enter long-term price and production agreements and to enforce the price-fixing agreements by resolving disputes amongst the conspirators,” according to the complaint.
Philips Electronics North American is a unit of Amsterdam- based Royal Philips Electronics NV. Amy Shanler, a company spokeswoman, had no immediate comment on the lawsuit.
A representative for Toyko-based Hitachi didn’t immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.
Jason Kim, a Seoul-based spokesman for Samsung, and Ken Hong, a Seoul-based spokesman for LG, said the companies don’t have immediate comments and are looking into the matter. (Bloomberg)

삼성전자와 LG전자가 18일(현지시간) 가격담합 혐의로 미국 검찰에 의해 피소됐다.
일리노이주 검찰총장인 리사 마디간은 이날 시카고 소재 주(州) 법원에 제출한 소장에서 삼성전자와 LG전자 등이 최소 12년 동안 가격 담합을 통해 음극선관의 가격을 부풀렸다고 주장했다. 음극선관은 컴퓨터와 TV 모니터에 들어가는 부품이다.
마디간 총장은 피해액을 특정하지 않은 채 가격 담합 및 부풀리기로 인한 피해가 일리노이 주민들에게 전가됐다며 법원에 과징금 부과를 요구했다.
네덜란드 기업 필립스 북미법인, 일본 업체들인 히타치와 도시바도 함께 피소됐다.
소장에 따르면 검찰은 피소된 회사들이 1995년 3월1일부터 2007년11월25일까지 고위급 인사들 간의 분기별 회동을 통해 음극선관 가격을 담합하고, 생산량을 조율한 것으로 확인됐다고 적었다.
서울의 삼성전자와 LG전자 측 대변인은 현재로선 코멘트할 것이 없으며, 자체적으로 사안을 살펴보고 있다고 말했다. 필립스 북미법인과 히타치는 코멘트 요청에 즉각 응하지 않았다.
