Seoul’s Jongmyo Park and Tapgol Park will receive a makeover as part of the metropolitan government’s efforts to turn the districts in central Seoul into elderly-friendly areas, officials said Friday.
The two parks now surrounded by elder-oriented facilities, such as a classic movie cinema, hairdresser and soup kitchen, are visited by an estimated 3,000 senior citizens every day.
The metropolitan government and the Ministry of Health and Welfare will collaborate to refurbish the surrounding areas of the two parks to resemble Japan’s Sugamo district.
Sugamo, a popular area for the older generation, is visited by some 9 million people annually and home to roughly 200 shops, some of which are also run by senior citizens.
The city said it will adopt a “service design” method, taking into consideration the ideas of elderly citizens, as well as creating more jobs and amenities. (Yonhap News)
