Jang Lee-soo, a potter who has never made dishes before, is holding her first dish exhibition at Gallery White Birch in Suyu-dong, northern Seoul.

After receiving BFA and MFA in Ceramic Art in Hongik University, the artist made creative installation works out of ceramics. It was only recently, when the director of Gallery White Birch urged her to try making dishes, that Jang changed her direction.

At first, Jang said, it was more difficult than she had imagined, and she even felt like she was copying other artists. But she soon regained her self-confidence and also found joy in the new genre.

“What I made are not regular dishes but sculpture-like-dishes in which viewers can really feel the presence of the artist. My heart flutters to think what kind of things I could put in the dishes. I would like to put a dish full of anticipation and share it,” said the artist.

At the current exhibition, Jang presents over 40 pieces of her recent creations. She displayed about 25 formally on exhibition and hung the rest on the walls, using her talent for installations.

The exhibition runs through Aug. 30 at Gallery White Birch in Suyu-dong, northern Seoul. For more information, call (02) 906-7944 or visit www.galleryjjinamu.com.
