Hong Suk-woo, a former chief of the Small & Medium Business Administration, has been named new president of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, the trade agency said Wednesday.

Hong, 58, will supervise the agency’s overall business and shore up overseas operations, concentrating on “globalizing small-and medium-sized firms to steer the era of $1 trillion trade,” KOTRA said in a statement.

“I will strive to restructure KOTRA and refocus all its projects on SMEs to strengthen their global competitiveness,” he said in an inaugural speech at KOTRA’s headquarter in Seoul.

Prior to the new post, Hong headed the central SMBA in Seoul and its branch offices in Busan and Daegu, and served the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (currently the Ministry of Knowledge Economy) as a senior official in the trade and investment policy.

A graduate of Seoul National University, the SME expert is well-known for his field management and ability to integrate the organization, KOTRA said.
