A poker tournament is one of several events taking place May 27-29 at Rhythm & Booze in Bucheon to raise money for underprivileged children.

“Raising Hope: A Fundraiser to Help Underprivileged Children Get Ahead” is presented by Rhythm & Booze and BaboPromos. Participants in its poker tournament must pay an entry fee of 50,000 won, and a maximum of 50 can take part. The tournament starts Saturday, May 28 at 5 p.m.

Harry Delaney of BaboPromos said that he and a few others have been teaching underprivileged children, ages 6-12, at the Sosa-gu City Council Office/Building for about a year.

“These kids are all elementary students that live in the Sosa area and can’t afford academies and what such,” Delaney said.

“So we get together with these kids and teach them anything from the basics to some simple sentence structures. There’s usually anywhere between 10-20 students per weekends.”

Also, they introduce the children to foreign culture through activities such as watching movies, eating meals and celebrating holidays together.

Through the fund-raiser, they hope to provide the children with school supplies to help further their education.

The fund-raiser starts at 10 p.m. on May 27 at Rhythm and Booze with a performance by rock band Los Diablos Blancos. After the poker tournament the following day, there will be Free Thinking 2 (Hip-Hop Night) featuring performances be several local DJs and MCs. Finally on Sunday, May 29 starting at 7 p.m. will be Ultimate Trivia Night, with a 10,000 won entrance fee per participant.

Prizes will be provided to the top three finishers in the poker tournament and for winners of the the trivia competition.

Prizes will also be raffled during the hip-hop performance.

In addition to Rhythm & Booze and BaboPromos, sponsors for the event include R-16 (World B-boy Competition), Naked Bar and Grill and Wolfhound Pub.
