North Korea threatened on Thursday to launch bomb attack on South Korean soil as Seoul prepares to hold events marking the second anniversary of the North's deadly shelling of a South border island two years ago.

A memorial service, a naval firing drill and other commemorative events are to take place to commemorate the deaths of two soldiers in the North's artillery bombardment of Yeonpyeong Island in the Yellow Sea on Nov. 23, 2010. The attack, which was the first launched by the North against civilians in the South since the Korean War ended in a truce in 1953, killed two soldiers and two civilians.

"The commemoration of the so-called victorious battle on Yeonpyeong Island will lead to the second Yeonpyeong Island disaster as long as the (North) Korean People's Army is standing firm guard," the North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported in an English-language dispatch, quoting a spokesman of the army's southwestern front command. "It is the steadfast will of the service personnel not to miss the opportunity to do so if the warmongers perpetrate another provocation."

The KCNA report also accused Seoul of holding the commemoration events and "painting" the Yeonpyeong incident as a "victorious battle" in a scenario to "spark off a new war in the (Yellow Sea border) area."

"The commemoration projected by them, trumpeting about victorious battle, would only harden the resolution of the service personnel of the southwestern front command to retaliate against them," KCNA noted. (Yonhap News)

북한, “불바다 만들겠다” 위협


북한은 21일 우리 정부가 북한의 연평도 포격 2 주기를 맞아 각종 추모행사를 벌일 계획에 대해 `제2의 연평도 불바다'를 거론하며 위협했다.

북한군 서남전선사령부 대변인은 이날 조선인민군신문사 기자와 문답에서 "우리 군대가 있는 한 괴뢰들의 거짓으로 포장된 `연평도 승전' 기념식 추태는 제2의 연평도 불바다로 이어지게 될 것"이라며 "괴뢰들이 다시 도발을 걸어온다면 그 기회를 절대로 놓치지 않겠다는 것이 우리 서남전선군 장병의 드팀 없는 의지" 밝혔다고 조 선중앙통신이 보도했다.

대변인은 "승전 나발을 불어대며 그 무슨 기념식 따위 놀음을 벌여놓을수록 그것은 우리 서남전선군 장병의 보복의지만을 백배해줄 뿐"이라고 강조했다.

국가보훈처와 해병대는 22일 대전현충원에서 연평도 포격으로 희생된 전사자 묘역 참배행사가 열리고 정부는 오는 23일에는 서울 용산의 전쟁기념관에서  `튼튼한 안보 없이는 평화도 번영도 없다'는 주제로 연평도 포격의 2주기 행사를 개최할 예정이다.

앞서 북한의 노동당 기관지 노동신문은 21일 우리 국방부가 북한의 연평도 포격 에 따른 남북 포격전을 내부적으로 `승전(勝戰)'이라고 표현한 데 대해 "쓰디쓴 참패의 진상을 오도해 수치를 모면하고 체면을 세워보려는 가소로운 추태"라며 "북남 대결소동을 한층 더 강화하기 위한 반공화국도발소동"이라고 비난했다.
