A demonstration by the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church in Washington state was interrupted by dozens of counter-protesters dressed as zombies.

Melissa Neace, 27, of Spanaway, said she rallied the zombie hoards on Facebook after discovering eight members of the Kansas-based church were planning a demonstration Sunday at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord in DuPont, The News Tribune, Tacoma, Wash., reported Tuesday.

Westboro‘s lawyer sent a fax to DuPont Police Chief Ron Goodpaster about the church’s plans to gather “for a public demonstration/outdoor religious service regarding the judgment of God with respect to the dangers of promoting homosexuality, and the rest of the filthy manner of life and idol worshipping of this nation.”

Neace said her aim was to pull attention away from the protest.

“We wanted to turn something negative around, into something people could laugh at and poke fun at,” she said. “It was the easiest way to divert attention from something so hateful.” (UPI)

기독교를 몰아내는 좀비 떼 출현


미국 웨스트보로 침례 교회가 벌인 반(反) 동성애 시위가 좀비 떼에 가로막혔다. 교회의 동성애 반대 시위에 반대하는 사람들이 좀비로 분장해 시위를 방해하고 나섰던 것.

캔자스를 근거지로 한 웨스트보로 침례 교회는 기독교 근본주의로 유명하며, 특히 동성애에 강력하게 반대하는 것으로 잘 알려져 있다.

지난 2006년 이 교회는 이라크에서 전사한 미국 동성애자 군인의 장례식장에서 피켓 시위를 벌였다. 당시 교회 신자들은 ’동성애자가 신의 노여움을 사 사망했다’라고 주장해 유가족들로부터 고소를 당했으나 대법원 판결에서 ’표현의 자유’로 인정됐다.

동성애 옹호 발언으로 유명한 레이디 가가에 대해서는 지난 2009년 프레드 펠프스 담임목사가 "신은 레이디 가가를 싫어하며, 그녀는 지옥에 떨어질 것"이라는 성명을 내기도 했다.

멜리사 니스(27)는 이 교회가 워싱턴의 루이스-맥코드 합동 군사 기지에서 시위를 벌인다는 계획을 접수했다. 그는 "사람들의 관심을 극단적인 증오로부터 돌리고 싶었다"고 말했다. 

페이스북에서 좀비 떼를 결집시킨 그는 "부정적인 것들을 사람들이 웃고 농담하고 재미를 느낄 수 있는 것으로 바꾸고 싶었다,"며 좀비 시위의 이유를 밝혔다.
