[Newsmaker] 3 of 14 crew dead, 1 missing, after boat capsizes off Jeju

Three South Korean men have died after being rescued from a capsized boat near Jeju Island.

The 24-ton fishing boat with 14 people aboard overturned 87 kilometers southwest of Marado, an island 8 kilometers off the southern coast of Jeju, on Monday morning.

Thirteen of the 14 crew members -- eight Koreans and six Indonesians -- have been rescued and transferred to nearby hospitals, but three were pronounced dead, including the boat’s 61-year-old captain surnamed Hwang. A search was underway for the missing man, surnamed Choi, 66.

The Coast Guard said of the rescued, four were found on lifeboats and the other nine, who were wearing life jackets, in the waters.

Two patrol vessels, weighing 5,000 tons and 3,000 tons, respectively, and Air Force helicopters have been mobilized for the rescue operation.

According to the Coast Guard, the boat, which was still communicating with a nearby fishing boat until 6:40 a.m., overturned at around 7:19 a.m.

The Coast Guard said rough weather likely caused the boat to overturn. A high seas warning had been issued at the time of the accident.

This is the second maritime accident in Jeju waters in less than a week. On Nov. 19, a 29-ton fishing boat with 12 aboard caught fire off the southern coast of Jeju, leaving one dead and 11 missing.
