Leadership of minor opposition party resigns over election defeat

A co-head of the minor opposition Bareunmirae Party and senior officials resigned Friday after the party suffered a crushing defeat in this week's local elections.

Park Joo-sun, the co-leader of the centrist party, and other officials stepped down over an election fiasco in which the party failed to win even one seat out of 17 big-city mayoralties and provincial governorships.

"I sincerely apologized to the people who supported our party and had high expectations for its role," Park told a press conference. "All of our top party officials and I have decided to resign (over the election defeat)."

Yoo Seong-min, a co-leader of the party, also resigned Thursday for the same reason.

Kim Dong-cheol, the floor leader of the party, will serve as the chief of an emergency committee to tackle the post-election situation, officials said.

The Bareunmirae Party came into being in February through a merger of two minor parties with divergent support bases -- one is center-right and the other is left-leaning.

The merger of the two parties was viewed as a bold experiment in South Korean politics, where regional loyalties remain strong.

This week's elections were the first nationwide polls for the Bareunmirae Party.

The ruling Democratic Party clinched a landslide victory in the local elections and parliamentary by-elections held Wednesday. (Yonhap)
