The office of President Moon Jae-in Saturday welcomed the resumption of talks between the United States and North Korea for discussions on a bilateral summit.

Moon's spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said that South Korea regards the renewed hope for a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as a "fortunate" development.

"It's a fortunate thing that the possibility of the North Korea-U.S. dialogue is still alive without being terminated," Kim said in a message to reporters. "(Cheong Wa Dae) is carefully watching the progress."

The welcome message came after Trump told reporters Washington and Pyongyang were talking and both sides want to have the meeting that was supposed to be held in Singapore. He noted that his planned meeting with Kim could still take place June 12.

Trump earlier canceled his meeting with Kim but appears to have changed his position after hearing what he calls a positive message from Pyongyang. (Yonhap)
