South Korea is falling out of favor with Japanese travelers, dropping in the ranking of their favorite trip destinations, a survey showed Thursday.

An analysis by the Korea Tourism Organization on free independent tourism said South Korea ranked 10th, having been named by 2.5 percent of Japanese tourists surveyed last year as their preferred travel destination. This is a marked fall from 4.4 percent in 2014, when South Korea placed fifth. The country fell to ninth place in 2015 with 3.1 percent.

Tourism industry officials expect South Korea to fall even further in this year's ranking due to concerns over North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.

Of the reasons Japanese travelers chose not to come to Korea, the survey showed 31.4 percent of those polled were not interested Korean Wave. Another 29.7 percent cited the weak yen. The next biggest reason was a poor impression of the country at 25.8 percent. Deteriorating South Korea-Japan relations was named by 9.8 percent. Multiple answers were allowed for in the survey.

In last year's survey, 24 percent of Japanese vacationers picked Hawaii as their favorite location for travel, making it the No. 1 choice since 2014. Italy followed with 5.8 percent, France 5.1 percent, Taiwan 4.2 percent, Britain 3.8 percent, Canada and Germany 2.9 percent each, Guam 2.8 percent and Scandinavia 2.5 percent. (Yonhap)
