A former trade minister has been appointed the head of the country's leading trade promotion agency, with final approval expected to be given at a meeting set for next week, the Korea International Trade Association said Friday.

The representative member companies of KITA held a meeting earlier in the day to appoint former Trade, Industry and Energy Minister Kim Young-joo as its chairman and CEO, a spokeswoman said.

The appointment is subject to approval by member companies in an extraordinary meeting set for Thursday, she said. The top position has been vacant after former Chairman and CEO Kim In-ho stepped down last month.

Kim Young-joo served as trade minister from 2007-2008 and helped the five-year-old free trade agreement between Korea and the United States be ratified at the National Assembly. (Yonhap)
