Top court convicts famed ex-senior prosecutor for bribery, tax evasion

South Korea's highest court convicted a former senior prosecutor of bribery and tax evasion Thursday and sentenced him to two years in prison.
The Supreme Court upheld a ruling by the lower court that found Hong Man-pyo guilty of the charges and confirmed its initial sentence. The court also retained the appeals court's order on the defendant to forfeit 200 million won ($179,000) for the unpaid tax.
Hong, 57, was indicted in 2016 for receiving 500 million won in kickbacks from the former head of a local cosmetics company to help cover up his overseas gambling charges and win business deals.
Under the country's law, lawyers are prohibited from exerting influence with the prosecution to help their clients.
He is also accused of dodging taxes totaling 1.3 billion won.
He was sentenced to three years in jail by the lowest court. But the appeals court commuted his sentence to two years, dismissing one of the bribery counts due to insufficient evidence.
The prosecutor-turned-lawyer was a prominent prosecutor who investigated major corruption cases involving the country's former presidents. Hong resigned from the prosecution office in 2011 and subsequently worked as a lawyer. (Yonhap)
