The smoking rate of South Korean men aged 19 or older has fallen in recent years, but the rate still remains high, data showed Saturday.

The proportion of men who smoke came to 39.1 percent in 2016, compared with 43.3 percent in 2014, according to the data compiled by Statistics Korea. There was no data on the smoking rate in 2015.

South Korea is a member of the Paris-based body that is composed of a group of 35 mostly rich nations.

Japan came in second with 30 percent, followed by Italy with 25 percent.

In 2015, South Korea increased the price of cigarettes by 80 percent, from 2,500 won ($2.25) per pack to 4,500 won, in an effort to curb smoking.

The South Korean government also mandated tobacco companies place graphic images showing the harmful effects of smoking on the upper part of cigarette packs in 2016.
