North Korea has shown no interest in talks on its denuclearization, the State Department said Saturday, after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson acknowledged there was communication between the sides.

"US diplomats have several open channels in which we can communicate with officials within the North Korean regime,"department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.

Washington has assured Pyongyang that it does not seek to topple the regime, accelerate reunification of the Korean Peninsula or send troops into the North, she said.

Still, "North Korean officials have shown no indication that they are interested in or are ready for talks regarding denuclearization."

Earlier in the day, Tillerson told reporters in Beijing that the US has been reaching out to North Korea.

"We ask: 'Would you like to talk?' We have lines of communications to Pyongyang. We're not in a dark situation, a blackout," he said. "We can talk to them. We do talk to them."

Tension has run high with North Korea conducting its sixth nuclear test early this month and launching a series of ballistic missiles, including two over Japan.

President Donald Trump has threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea in response to any attack on the US or its allies, stoking fears of an armed clash on the peninsula. (Yonhap)
