S. Korean foreign minister, UN chief agree on peaceful resolution of NK issues

NEW YORK -- South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday agreed to seek a peaceful resolution of the North Korean nuclear issues, diplomatic sources in New York said.

They said Kang, who is visiting New York City for the UN General Assembly, met with Guterres earlier in the day.

Before becoming the foreign minister earlier this year, Kang served as the chief of the transition team and senior policy adviser for Gueterres when he was secretary-general designate.

According to the sources, Gueterres stressed the importance of a peaceful resolution of tensions on the Korean Peninsula, escalating amid a war of words between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump.

Kang was on board with Gueterres' ideas, and also called on close cooperation between the South Korean government and the UN

The sources added Kang also thanked Gueterres for his willingness to take an active role in helping resolve issues confronting the Korean Peninsula.

Also Saturday, Kang met with her Gambian counterpart Ousainou Darboe in New York and discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation, according to the foreign minister's office.

Kang offered to expand aid to Gambia to ensure that the western African country can achieve economic growth and sustain national development following its peaceful transition of power.

Gambia's new President Adama Barrow defeated longtime leader Yahya Jammeh in the presidential election in December. (Yonhap)
