Thousands of North Koreans held a massive anti-US demonstration in Pyongyang over the weekend, rallying around their leader as he intensifies his war of words with US President Donald Trump.

North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency reported on Sunday that more than 100,000 people attended the rally at Kim Il Sung Square in their capital city the previous day.

In a rare statement released under his own name last Friday, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un vowed to take the "highest-level" action in response to Trump's threat to "totally destroy" the North over its nuclear and missile programs.

Then at Saturday's mass gathering, Kim Su-gil, alternate member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party, read out Kim Jong-un's statement.

The KCNA said other party and military officials made speeches at the rally. Ri Il-bae, a commanding officer of the Worker-Peasant Red Guards, said North Korea was ready to battle the Americans.

"We are waiting for the moment of final decisive battle to remove the US, empire of evil, from the globe," the KCNA quoted him as saying in English. "Once respected Supreme Commander Kim Jong-un issues an order, we will annihilate the group of aggressors with the arms of revolution."

The KCNA added the demonstrators were "full of the stamina not to miss the golden opportunity for giving vent to pent-up wrath of the Korean people but to wipe out the US group of ignorant gangsters letting loose such invectives as 'total destruction.'" (Yonhap)
