A US-based agile Army artillery unit conducted a live-fire exercise along the west coast of South Korea on Thursday, demonstrating its precision-strike capability in rapid deployment, US Forces Korea said.

The USFK's Eighth Army said it staged the joint training in Daecheon, South Chungcheong Province, with the 18th Field Artillery Brigade based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise focused on honing the artillery unit's ability to deploy forces to the peninsula "with little or no notice" and rapidly integrate with local units to execute its mission, according to the Eighth Army.
 

The unit was deployed here with no notice to unit members, but it conducted a live fire exercise upon landing in Korea, shooting long-range precision munitions at Jik-do Island off the west coast, said the Eighth Army.

The training involved the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System and other assets, showcasing the US capacity to rapidly deploy long-range precision munitions.

HIMARS is a light multiple rocket launcher mounted on an Army tactical vehicle.

"This exercise shows Eighth Army’s ability to integrate joint capabilities with stateside units to any location on the Korean Peninsula in support of the ROK (South Korea)-US Alliance,” Lt. Gen. Thomas Vandal, Eighth Army Commander, said in a statement. (Yonhap)
