A high-ranking official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is suspected of issuing remarks suggesting gender discrimination against women.

According to a report from local newspaper the Segye Ilbo, the official declared that women are less able than men during a private meeting with reporters Thursday.

“Women are inferior. When I was at school, there weren’t many women because they lagged behind,” the official said. “Women should care for the children if they delivered them. That is happiness. Women these days have a victim mentality.”

The government official reportedly apologized to the Segye Ilbo reporter via phone Sunday, saying, “I did not have a bad intention and if you were uncomfortable with it, I am sorry.”

The Foreign Ministry has launched an investigation into the allegation.
