Police response to farmer’s death sparks controversy

[1] Controversy escalated Monday over the call by the police for an autopsy on the body of farmer Baek Nam-gi, who died after being struck by a police water cannon during an anti-government protest last year.

*escalate: 치솟다, 번지다
*rachet up: 증가시키다
*autopsy: 부검

[2] Baek, a 69-year-old farmer, died at 1:58 p.m. on Sunday at Seoul National University Hospital, 317 days after he fell into a coma due to a water cannon blast that directly hit his head during the Nov. 14 rally. Baek was at the rally to protest the government’s decision to liberalize imports of rice.

*fall into a coma:

[3] As Baek’s family and the public mourned the death of the senior activist, the police requested a warrant to conduct an autopsy on Baek’s body Sunday night, saying that the cause of his death is “unclear” and “disputed.” But the court rejected the application a few hours later.

*mourn the death of someone: ~의 죽음을 애도하다

New evidence of water plumes on Jupiter‘s moon Europa

[1] More evidence of possible water plumes erupting from the surface of Jupiter‘s icy moon Europa has been spotted using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, the US space agency said Monday.

[2] Europa, one of more than 50 moons circling the gas giant, is considered by NASA as a “top candidate” for life elsewhere in the solar system because it is believed to possess a massive, salty, subsurface ocean that is twice the size of Earth‘s.

[3] The latest finding has given scientists fresh hope that a robotic spacecraft could one day fly past these potential plumes and learn about their contents without having to drill miles deep into the moon’s icy shell.

*miles deep: 수킬로미터 (1 mile=1.6km)
*skin-deep (shallow): 얄팍한
