Inspired by 18th century German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s take on ancient playwright Euripides’ “Iphigenia in Tauris,” “Walls - Iphigenia in Exile” will be performed at the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju from Oct. 14-16.

A modern interpretation of an ancient Greek tragedy, the 120-minute play is a co-production by a team of four Korean directors, Choi Zin-A, Lee Kyung-sung, Yi Kon and Yang Jung-ung, and Tilmann Kohler, a German director.

Each director will present a contemporary take on one of the five acts from the original Greek play, which chronicles siblings’ fight to reverse the generations-old curse brought upon them and their kingdom by one arrogant predecessor. 

Funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, “Walls - Iphigenia in Exile” aims to shed light on the socially-constructed concept of boundaries. It stars cast members from Germany and Korea, two countries that have been directly impacted by both geographical and political divisions.

Performed bilingually in German and Korean, the performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, and at 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Ticket prices range from 20,000 won to 30,000 won. A 30 percent discount is available for those who purchase tickets from now until Sept. 18.
