The number of Japanese films distributed in Korea surpassed the number of American films for the first time in 2015, according to data from the Korea Media Rating Board Monday.

Japanese films accounted for 28.8 percent of the total films rated in Korea with 483 movies, while U.S. films made up 25.1 percent of all films rated in Korea with 422 films. Korea claimed 21.8 percent of all rated films with 367 works.

Last year, the number of Japanese films distributed in Korea rose sharply from 285 to 483, and 81.1 percent of Japanese films that were rated by the Korea Media Rating Board were classified as suitable only for adult audiences.

The increase indicates a growing demand for adults-only films for viewing through nontheater channels, such as video on demand and IPTV services, according to the ratings board.
