민주당과 안철수의원이 추진중인 새정치민주연합은 목요일 영문 당명을 New Politics Alliance for Democracy로 확정했다.
새정치민주연합의 한글 당명은 지난 12일부터 사흘간 진행한 당명 공모를 통해 김한길 민주당 대표와 안철수 새정치연합 중앙운영위원장이 만나 최종적으로 당명 결정에 합의한 것으로 전해졌다.
민주당측에서는 1,424명이 응모해 새정치민주당이 138명으로 1위를 차지했다. 새정치민주연합(120명), 새정치국민연합(33명), 새정치민주신당(26명), 새정치미래연합(16명) 등의 순이었다.
반면 새정치연합측에서는 ‘새정치민주연합’, ‘새정치민주당’, ‘새정치국민연합’ 순으로 나타났다.
한편 새정치연합은 24일 제주도당 창당대회로 지방당 창당을 마무리하고 26일 서울에서 중앙당 창당대회를 가질 예정이다. 이 후 30일 민주당과 공식 합당대회로 새정치연합이 새로운 제1야당이 된다.

The official English name for the new party being formed through the merger of the main opposition Democratic Party and Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo’s new politics alliance is to be the New Politics Alliance for Democracy, or NPAD for short, officials announced Thursday.
The party’s Korean name, which translates to “New Politics Democracy Alliance,” was chosen on March 16 from suggestions collected by the two sides.
Although the word “democracy” or “democratic,” which has long been associated with the main opposition party in Korea, is included in the full Korean name, the short version will be “New Politics Alliance” in Korean.
