英정부 화웨이 보이콧, LG U+ 불똥 튀나?

영국의 주요 정부기관에서 세계 2위 통신장비업체인 화웨이의 장비를 보안 안전상의 이유로 사용을 중단하기로 했다는 보도가 외신에 게재되면서 국내에도 파장이 있을 것으로 예상되고 있다.

현재 국내 통신업체 중에서는 LG U+가 유일하게 화웨이와 손잡은 상태다.

홍콩의South China Morning Post등의 외신보도에 따르면, 영국의 법무부와 검찰 등의 주요 정부 기관에서 보안을 이유로 회의에서 더 이상 화웨이 장비를 사용하지 않기로 결정했다.

영국의 다른 일간지도 이 같은 사실을 보도하면서 소식통으로부터 정보를 전달받은 정부 장관들이 긴급회의를 소집해 모든 정부 기관에서 화웨이 장비의 사용을 전면 금지하도록 지시했다고 전했다.

화웨이 관계자는 문제가 될만한 장비를 직접 판매한 적은 없지만, 제 3자를 통해 판매되었을 가능성이 있을 수 있다면서 중국정부와는 관련이 없는 사안이라고 밝혔다.

국내에서는 LG U+가 지난 10월 화웨이를 롱텀에볼루션(LTE) 장비 납품기업으로 선정했다.

하지만 그 이후로 화웨이의 보안 문제에 대한 논란은 끊이지 않고 있으며, 특히 미국의회에서는 공개적으로 반대했다.

LG U+ 이상철 부회장은 작년 말 긴급간담회를 통해 “화웨이 장비로 인한 보안 문제는 절대로 있을 수 없다”고 적극 해명한 바 있다.

당시 LG U+는 자사의 통신망은 외부 인터넷망과 완전 분리돼 있어 원격 접속이 불가능한 폐쇄망일 뿐만 아니라 통신망을 직접 운영 및 감시하기 때문에 백도어 소프트웨어(SW)가 몰래 설치되는 것은 불가능하다고 말했다.

한편, 영국은 지난해에도 화웨이 장비의 안전성을 집중 감독하겠다고 밝힌바 있다. 당시 영국 BBC 등 외신 보도에 따르면 영국의 감청기관인 정보통신본부(GCHQ)는 중국산 장비 도입 확대로 주요 통신망 보안이 위협받을 수 있다는 의회 권고에 따라 그런 계획을 세웠다.

Britain bans Huawei's equipment

Huawei, the world’s second largest communication equipment company based in China, has been banned from being used at all government meetings in the United Kingdom, according to reports from the foreign press on Thursday (local time).

Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post said that the Home Office, Ministry of Justice and Crown Prosecution Service are “all said to have stopped using the devices during meetings amid fears that the devices could contain eavesdropping bugs.”

Another British Sunday newspaper said that ministers “acting on specific intelligence” issued a top-level briefing that virtually ordered all departments to stop using the Huawei equipment.

Last year, Huawei reportedly signed contracts worth 125 million pounds ($205.17 million) for rolling out networking equipment for Britain’s national infrastructure.

A Huawei spokesman told the press that while some of the equipment might have been sold through a third party, it did not directly sell the devices.

The spokesman also called the current media reports “inaccurate,” and that it had no “close links” with the Chinese government.

In Korea, LG UPlus has signed up to deploy the Huawei equipment despite a steady stream of concerns from the government and also the public over possible security breaches posed by the Chinese government.

The U.S. Congress publicly denounced the move, saying that deploying the equipment could pose serious security risks.

LG UPlus continues to maintain that there would be no problems, as the Huawei equipment would be separately managed. It also said it would receive international certification of safety for the equipment.
