‘가상화폐’인 비트코인의 단위당 거래가 격이 처음으로 1천 달러 선을 돌파했다.
일본 도쿄 소재 유명 비트코인 거래소인 마운트곡스에 따르면 비트코인의 가치는 28일 오전 1시 40분 사상 최고치인 1천73달러(약 114만원)를 기록한 이래 오전 8시 현재 약 1천45달러에 거래됐다.
한 달 전(205달러)과 비교하면 5배, 작년에 비하면 90배 가까이 치솟은 셈이다.
마운트곡스 거래가격 1천 달러 돌파 소식과 함께 한국의 비트코인 거래소인 '코빗' 거래가도 오전 현재 124만5천원까지 뛰었다.
2009년 '나카모토 사토시'란 정체불명의 개발자가 선보인 비트코인은 컴퓨터 간P2P(피어투피어) 방식으로 유통되는 '사이버 머니'로, 국외 송금 수수료도 매우 낮고 100% 익명 구매•송금이 가능한데다가 거래 제한도 없어 인기를 끌고 있다.
비트코인은 유럽, 북미, 중국 등에서 이미 돈처럼 쓰이고 있으며 한국에도 최근 비트코인을 원화와 교환할 수 있는 거래소가 등장했다. 세계 최대 비트코인 거래소로는 중국 BTC 차이나와 일본 마운트곡스 등이 꼽힌다.
독일은 지난 8월 비트코인을 개인 간 거래용 통화로 공식 인정했고 캐나다 밴쿠버에서는 비트코인을 현금으로 교환하는 ATM기기가 등장하기도 했다.
그러나 화폐 가치가 작년 말 이후 수십 배 이상으로 치솟아 거품 우려가 크고 익명 거래 특성상 마약매매 등에 쓰일 수 있어 위험한 자산이라는 지적도 만만찮다.
미국 당국은 지난달 비트코인을 이용해 마약, 총기류, 불법해킹 프로그램 등을 거래한 온라인 장터인 '실크로드'를 폐쇄하고 그 운영자를 체포하기도 했다.
앞서 미국의 금융경제 분석 웹사이트인 마켓워치는 한 달 전부터 비트코인 가격 1천 달러 돌파를 전망하면서 투기성 자본 과열에 따른 가격 급락이 대규모 피해로 이어질 수 있다며 주의를 당부했다.
한국에서는 아직 비트코인을 쓸 수 있는 웹사이트나 상점이 없다. 지난 4월 비트코인을 원화로 사고팔 수 있는 코빗이 출범했지만, 고객 대다수는 국외 사이트 구매, 소액 송금, 순수 투자가 목적이다. 코빗의 하루 평균 거래액은 약 3억원이다. (연합뉴스)

Bitcoin rises above $1,000
The virtual currency bitcoin Wednesday broke above $1,000 per unit, quintupling in a month, according to Mt. Gox, which manages trading in bitcoin.
Launched in 2009 as the invention of a mysterious computer guru who goes by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, bitcoins can be exchanged online for real money or used to buy goods and services on the Internet. The currency is not regulated by any government.
Bitcoin reached $1,073 at 1640 GMT. At 1746 GMT, the currency was trading at $1,055, according to Mt. Gox.
The currency traded at just $205 on October 28 and is known for its volatility.
Still, bitcoin has gotten momentum in recent weeks after US regulators, including Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, took a more positive view of the currency than many analysts had expected at a congressional hearing earlier this month.
Regulators have also discussed stepping up oversight in light of concerns that it could be used for money laundering and other illicit purposes.
Bitcoins recently made headlines when the US Federal Bureau of Investigation closed the Silk Road website where illegal drugs, forged documents, hacker tools and even the services of hitmen were hawked. The FBI seized 26,000 bitcoins worth $3.6 million at the time. (AFP)
