미국에서 10년간 실종되어있던 여성들이 지난 6일 (현지시간) 오하이오의 한 가정집에서 극적으로 구출되었다고 CNN과 AP통신 등이 보도했다.

보도에 따르면 6일, 스스로를 “아만다 베리”라고 밝힌 한 여성이 긴급 구조대에 전화해 자신이 납치되었다고 밝혔다고 한다. 그녀는 다급한 목소리로 “납치범이 돌아오기 전에 구해달라”고 간곡히 부탁했다.

경찰은 긴급전화가 온 곳으로 가서 베리를 구출했다. 그녀는 지난 2003년 4월 21일, 자신의 17번째 생일을 하루 앞두고 실종되었다.

당국은 베리가 있던 집에서 각각 2004년과 2000년에 실종된 지나 드지저스와 미셸 나이트를 발견했는데, 실종 당시 드지저스는 14살, 나이트는 20살이었다.

이번 납치사건과 관련해 피해자들이 발견된 집의 주인은 한 52세 남성과 그의 형제 두 명이 체포되었다. 경찰은 용의자에 대한 상세 정보나 이들이 받고 있는 혐의에 대해서 아직 공개하지 않았다.

사건과 관련된 결정적인 제보를 한 용의자의 이웃에 따르면, 이번 사건은 큰 이웃주민들에게 큰 충격이었다고 한다. 그 이유는 용의자가 그저 평범한 사람처럼 보였고 실제로 그렇게 행동했기 때문이라고 한다.

제보자는 자신이 용의자와 함께 어울린 적도 있으며 그와 함께 바비큐를 구워먹고 살사음악을 즐긴 적도 있지만, 용의자에 집에 젊은 여성들이 갇혀 있을 줄은 상상도 못했다고 전했다.

“그(용의자)는 당신이 거리에서 한번 보고 지나칠 사람이에요. 평범한 행동을 하는 사람이거든요”라고 제보자는 전했다. (코리아헤럴드)

Women missing for decade found in Ohio home

Three American women who went missing separately about 10 years ago were found on Monday inside a house in Ohio where they had been held captive, local media reported.

According to CNN and AP, a woman who identified herself as Amanda Berry called the police emergency dispatch and said she had been kidnapped. She pleaded to the police to pick her up before her captor returned.

Authorities went to the house and found Berry, who disappeared on April 21, 2003, a day before her 17th birthday.

They also found Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight, who were reported missing in 2004 and 2000, respectively. DeJesus was 14 and Knight was 20 at the time of their disappearance.

Police arrested the 52-year-old owner of the house and his two brothers in relation to the kidnapping, but did not release details on the suspects.

The news came as a shock to the suspect’s neighbors because he looked and acted like an ordinary man, according to a neighbor who provided information leading to the arrest.

The neighbor said he hung out with the suspect, had barbecues and listened to music, but had never imagined young women were imprisoned inside the house.
